If you have mold growth in your home, you need to remove it. To eliminate mold, you need to first eliminate whatever is causing the mold growth, and then you need to completely clean up the mold. There are many ways you could clean up mold, but one of the best ways would be with a bleach and water mixture.
Bleach is able to kill almost every type of mold you may find in your home. It is most effective on nonporous surfaces like tile, glass, and bathtubs. It works only on the exterior of porous surfaces like wood or drywall, leaving the mold growing within. If you attempt to clean porous surfaces with a bleach and water mixture, the water part of the mixture will end up absorbed, creating an even better habitat for the mold within to grow. If you have mold on a porous surface it may be best to remove and replace these items, otherwise the mold will just continue to flourish.
To kill mold you want a ratio of one part bleach to ten parts water, as any lesser ratio may not be effective. A stronger mixture would be fine. Apply the bleach mixture to the surface with a spray bottle or with a sponge or cloth.
You do not have to rinse the solution away from most surfaces, but be sure to rinse if you are cleaning mold from a surface where food is stored, prepared or consumed. You will also want to rinse the bleach mixture away if you have children or pets that may come in contact with the treated area.
When you use bleach to kill mold, make sure that the area is thoroughly ventilated. Open all windows, doors, and use fans. As the mold spores are disrupted as you clean it away, it could irritate those with mold sensitivities. Also, the fumes from the bleach mixing with other chemicals could make you ill.
Bleach can destroy mold as well as whatever it is growing on. Bleach is a harsh chemical that can eat away at the surface it is applied to, particularly if it is a porous surface. It can also discolor certain surfaces it is applied to, along with anything nearby that may come in contact with the bleach.
Bleach is effective in killing mold and keeping additional mold from growing back. When applied in a mixture of one part bleach to 10 parts water, mold can be eliminated from nonporous surfaces. No matter how you do it, mold needs to be removed right away to keep you and your family safe and healthy.
