What is Mold induced asthma

Mold-induced asthma is a particular type of allergy-induced asthma. Mold-induced asthma is a condition that develops in some individuals who are allergic to mold when they have a prolonged or intense exposure to mold. Mold-induced asthma can happen in individuals who aren’t otherwise asthmatic, but this condition can flare up in those who are already asthma sufferers.

Mold exposure can cause an inflammation of the bronchial tubes. This inflammation causes problems with the lungs and airways, constricting the flow of oxygen. Symptoms can include wheezing, shortness of breath, coughing, tightness in the chest, and full-on asthma attacks.

Mold-induced asthma can become worse if mold exposure continues. Direct contact with mold spores and physical activity can exasperate the condition.

Medications are used to treat mold-induced asthma. Corticosteroids, oral steroids, bronchodilator inhalers, antihistamines, immune therapy, and even nebulizer treatments may all be used to treat this condition. In addition, treatment must include reducing or completely eliminating any exposure to mold.

Asthma, including mold-induced asthma, can be a life threatening condition. If you have asthma or have experienced an allergy-induced asthma attack before, it is vital to have a game plan in place in the event of a future flare-up. Your loved ones need to know what steps to take in the event of an asthma emergency.

With or without a history of allergies or asthma, it is important that mold exposure be limited for everyone. While many molds induce allergies, other molds can also make any person terribly ill. For that reason, any mold found in the home needs to be removed or thoroughly cleaned. All conditions known to cause mold such as leaks or drainage problems need to be fixed.

Mold is a small microscopic fungus, but it can affect humans in a big way. Take all symptoms of mold allergies quite seriously, especially if breathing difficulties occur. If you have been exposed to mold, seek medical advice.
