When is Mold a problem?

Mold is found in many places in nature. This tiny fungus is perfectly natural and normal to find all around the great outdoors. When mold stays outside, it isn’t a problem; there it is a vital part of the ecosystem. When mold is inside, however, then it is a problem.

Any type of mold in any concentration can be a problem for some people. Some individuals will encounter the tell-tale musty odor or see small specks of dark or light spotting on basement walls or in and around the bath or shower. For most individuals this wouldn’t be a problem beyond being smelly or unsightly, but for those with sensitivities to mold, an amount that is simply a nuisance to some could make others terribly ill.

Certain molds, like those known as Toxic Mold, could be a health concern for normally healthy individuals. It is difficult for the average person to know which mold is simply unsightly and which type will make one ill, as there are about 1,000 types of mold that a person could potentially encounter in an average home. This means that it is vital to treat any mold growth as a serious problem and health concern.

Even dead, dried out mold could potentially cause a health problem. Breathing in or touching any mold, living or not, could make you ill, so it is important to use masks and gloves when cleaning up any mold that is found. More importantly you want to prevent the dampness that causes mold growth before a problem develops and to know what areas to inspect for mold growth. You can often locate mold in damp, moist, humid areas. If water has damaged furniture, carpeting, or building materials due to a flood or a plumbing leak, there is a very good chance that mold will be growing there, if it isn’t already. Any area of your home that has suffered extended water damage will almost always have mold growth.

Often mold will also grow on walls where the cool wall causes condensation from contacting warm, humid air. This often happens behind large pieces of furniture like headboards and armoires. Many times it also occurs in closets or other places where items are stored up against the walls. Mold is also found growing in rooms that are more humid, and where high water usage occurs. Laundry rooms, basements, kitchens and bathrooms are some of the most common household spaces for mold to be growing and reproducing.

If you find mold in any of these areas, or anywhere else, it is important to take steps to stop mold growth. There are several types of mold, some are only a problem for those with asthma and allergies, and others can make even the healthiest individual get ill, and it is extremely difficult to know which is which. Be sure to inspect for mold, as any mold growth is indeed a problem. If you find mold, take care and use all safety precautions to remove it and help keep your family safe and healthy.
